What Is PTSD?

PTSD is a type of trauma response. When a person experiences some trauma in their lifetime, but the brain does not healthily process that trauma, it can lead to this condition. PTSD involves repeated thoughts or imagines of that traumatic event. They can show up randomly, leading to an inability to focus on anything but those events. Sometimes people are not sure they have PTSD because not everyone has flashbacks. Some people have uneasy feelings or intense fears surrounding something that they do not fully understand.

How to Know If You Have PTSD

The causes of PTSD can range widely. Not every traumatic experience causes PTSD, either. How do you know you have it? Consider these signs:

  1. Experience a traumatic event: Most people have a memory of a traumatic event that touched them deeply. This experience may have been some type of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse, watching someone die, or being afraid for your life. Other times, you may have witnessed something happening to someone close to you.
  2. Avoiding things that remind you of that event: Many with PTSD can’t talk about the traumatic event. They may also have intense feelings about being around certain people, places, or things. These feelings could indicate some level of trauma exists.
  3. Flashbacks: Sounds, smells, or people trigger a flashback. That is a memory you may be able to see in your mind’s eye that is very specific and clear. Often, it is the most traumatic component of the event. It can feel like a movie playing in your head.
  4. Increased anxiety: PTSD can cause a significant amount of anxiety, especially during events that remind a person of the traumatic experience. It may also make engaging in activities that remind you of the event difficult. Riding in a car becomes challenging, for example, after watching an accident occur.
  5. Isolation and changes in behavior: Some people turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with what they feel. Other people pull away from family and friends to isolate themselves because that tends to be easier to manage.
