Effects of Alcohol During Pregnancy

Attachment Large Size Large Wp Post Image

September is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness month. This is a time to reach out to family and friends to teach them about the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

If you are using alcohol and are pregnant, recognize the risks and dangers of doing so. Then, reach out to a team that can help you detox from alcohol, like our professionals at Springfield Wellness Center, by calling 844.334.4727.

What Is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Month?

During this month, we take a look at the risks of alcohol during pregnancy. Even a small amount of it can potentially create long-lasting, life-threatening conditions to your unborn child. No amount of alcohol that you consume during pregnancy is safe. In addition, there is no safe time during pregnancy to drink.

What Does Drinking Alcohol During Pregnancy Do?

When a mother consumes alcohol, the substance enters her digestive system and is processed. It can travel through their bloodstream into the baby through the umbilical cord. That means that when you have a drink, so does the child.

However, during pregnancy, any amount of alcohol can cause damage to the child. This can include stillbirth, miscarriages, and physical disabilities. It can also lead to intellectual and behavioral disabilities. These cannot be cured. We call them fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, or FASDs.

The outcome of FASDs differs from one child to the other. Some of the common changes to the child may include:

  • Vision and hearing problems
  • Heart, kidney, and bone-related complications
  • Speech and language delays
  • Intellectually disability
  • Hyperactive behavior
  • Poor judgment skills
  • Problems sucking and gaining weight

There are many more risks. Some children with this condition also have abnormal facial features, a smaller head size, and lower body weight. Alcohol impacts the way the fetus grows and develops. Even a small amount of alcohol can trigger some of these risks to occur.

What Do You Do If You Have an Addiction?

For women with addiction, it is not simple to just stop using even if you are pregnant. Your first step is to recognize the risks of FSDs. That may give you the motivation to get clean. The good news is there are drug and alcohol detox programs that can help you break through this disease to get the support you need. This includes alcohol detox programs that can be safe for your unborn child.

If you have been drinking alcohol during pregnancy, it is never too late to stop. The sooner you do, the more likely it is for you and your child to remain healthy. Alcohol during pregnancy damage cannot be reversed, but you can limit the outcome.
