What is a Panic Attack?

A panic attack is when an extreme feeling of fear overtakes a person. This fear can be so harsh that the person cannot move and usually comes on unexpectedly. A panic attack may happen once or occur repeatedly.

Causes of a Panic Attack

A panic attack can happen for no reason. A person may even feel fine and relaxed before they experience a panic attack. There are also several causes of panic attacks. For example, some causes include:

  • Family history
  • Withdrawing from medication or other substances
  • Cardiac issues
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland)
  • Using stimulants such as cocaine, amphetamines, and caffeine

Symptoms of a Panic Attack

Symptoms of a panic attack usually happen immediately and reach their intensity in 10 minutes. Most symptoms only last 20 to 30 minutes, with some lasting an hour. Symptoms of a panic attack include:

  • Shaking or trembling
  • Fear of dying
  • Shortness of breath
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Heart palpitations
  • Cold or hot flashes

Other symptoms of a panic attack include losing control, chest pain, feeling dizzy, a choking feeling, upset stomach, not feeling attached to surroundings, and sweating. If these symptoms happen frequently and you are abusing substances, please seek help immediately.

How to Prevent a Panic Attack

How to prevent a panic attack is easier than it sounds. Exercising regularly can naturally reduce anxiety. Working out for at least 30 minutes three times a week can help prevent a panic attack from happening. Controlling your breathing can help reduce a panic attack from happening, especially if you sense one beginning to start. Getting a good night’s sleep is important if you want to avoid panic attacks. Try to get seven to nine hours of sleep a night.

Stay away from smoking, caffeine, and alcohol. There are specific relaxation techniques you can include in your daily routines, such as meditation and yoga, that can help relax you and prevent panic attacks. Hanging out with family and friends regularly can also lower the chances of panic attacks from happening.

Start by practicing one of these at a time, then combine some of these preventative techniques to avoid future panic attacks from happening.
