In fact, wellness refers to many aspects of the human condition. According to many experts, a person’s overall wellness refers to five different dimensions:
- Mental wellness – maintaining a healthy mindset and a positive attitude
- Physical wellness – maintaining good physical health through nutrition and exercise
- Spiritual wellness – maintaining connections to things outside of ourselves, perhaps a higher power
- Social wellness – careful creation and maintenance of healthy and positive relationships
- Lifestyle wellness – maintain a balance between work and play
How Addressing Wellness Helps in Addiction Treatment
Knowing the wellness definition is not enough to help addiction sufferers. There needs to be a way for therapists to apply certain treatment methodologies to help heal clients. That something is usually found in evidence-based therapies and holistic treatment programs.
In the case of evidence-based therapies, the objective is to help clients understand personal connections. The connections to which we refer are the connection between thoughts, feelings as well as the resulting behavior. In many cases, it’s negative thoughts and feelings that drive the addiction sufferer to self-medicate and avoid negativity. Awareness of their negativity gives the individual a chance to change their thoughts and behaviors and subsequently, their behavior.
