Effective Detox from ISO

Detoxing from any substance can be a difficult and dangerous process. However, it is also the first step toward recovery in most circumstances. The lethality of drugs on the streets has dramatically spiked in recent years, and more people are seriously considering the question, “Are there detox programs near me?” Springfield Wellness Center in Springfield, LA, offers detox programs for you or your loved one. Reach out to one of the professionals in our treatment team via 844.334.4727 to discover your detox options.

What Does ISO Mean?

One of the most lethal drugs currently on the street is Isotonitazene (ISO), which was initially available only through the dark web, but can now be found being sold alongside drugs such as fentanyl.

Etonitazene is a highly potent analgesic opioid. ISO is a synthetic form of the drug. During studies on animals and humans, etonitazene was seen to be extremely powerful and addictive, which is one of the reasons it never became commercially available. That change in 2019. It is most commonly seen in pill form but also can be found as an off-white or yellow powder.

How Is ISO Dangerous?

Isotonitazene is similar to fentanyl in that it is added to other, less lethal drugs to increase potency or create a less expensive replica. Many overdose victims have been found to have ingested ISO during their toxicology reports. Unfortunately, since it is so new to the market, most standard toxicology reports don’t test for ISO yet.

The potency of ISO can lead to withdrawals in a very short amount of time–and the symptoms are even worse than heroin withdrawal symptoms. The side effects are also concerning, including:

  • Respiratory failure
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

ISO is 100 times more potent than morphine. Studies show that ISO is responsible for 40 to 50 fatal overdoses per month in the United States.

ISO Detox

Springfield Wellness Center has had experience helping patients detox from ISO, which means helping them manage withdrawal symptoms, which include:

  • Agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Muscle Aches
  • Insomnia
  • Sweating

Withdrawal symptoms peak around 72 hours after a person has stopped taking an opioid. More severe withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Abdominal cramping
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

These withdrawal symptoms may sound scary, but proper treatment can be managed so that you or your loved one can safely undergo ISO detox.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

MAT often uses medications with counseling and therapies to treat opioid addiction. In fact, most types of MAT programs target opioid use disorders. Most of the medications used are intended to help patients remain in treatment longer and taper off of them as they discuss their mental health in talk therapy. Some of the most common medications used to detox from opioids, such as ISO, include:

  • Vivitrol
  • Suboxone
  • Methadone
