The signs of anxiety sometimes overlap with certain other mental health disorders. Learning the signs of anxiety helps to determine whether you or a loved one needs a comprehensive assessment and treatment from the caring professional staff at Springfield Wellness Center. Innovative treatments likely help to restore an overall sense of wellness while treating anxiety signs and symptoms.

What is Anxiety Disorder?

Everyone experiences some level of anxiety during their life. Feeling anxious before a job interview, or even before a date typically involves healthy, normal levels of anxiety. Once an event or situation resolves, the anxiety resolves, and the individual experiences no further anxiety about that situation or event.

Some people do not experience normal anxiety. The fear, panic, and worry reach levels that are beyond a normal amount of anxiety. There are individuals that experience potentially overwhelming and debilitating signs of anxiety.

There are several types of anxiety, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Some other anxiety disorders include:

  • Separation anxiety disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Specific or simple phobias

Signs of Anxiety

The signs and symptoms of anxiety disorders go beyond simply worrying or feeling tense. The National Institute of Mental Health indicates that researchers have discovered that several biological processes and parts of the brain are involved in playing, ‘a key role in fear and anxiety.’

Generalized anxiety disorder involves feeling intense anxiety, worry, or fear about everyday things. The person with GAD feels anxious and fearful even when it is not necessary, and when other people typically do not continue experiencing anxiety over the same type of situation.

People with generalized anxiety disorder have considerable difficulties controlling their worrying, even to the point of sweating, feeling restless, or having sleep disturbances.

Separation anxiety disorder occurs in adults and children. Adults that experience this type of anxiety have intense anxiety or fear that something will happen to the attachment figure while the two are separated from each other.

Social anxiety disorder falls under the phobias group of anxiety disorders. Previously, experts called social anxiety disorder social phobia. People that experience this phobia have an extreme feeling of anxiety regarding social situations. Individuals that demonstrate other specific or simple phobias have intense anxiety about objects or situations. Examples of these phobias include becoming extremely anxious or fearful about flying in an airplane, fear of getting a vaccination or having blood drawn because of anxiety over needles, or anxiety related to certain animals, such as snakes or large dogs.

Panic disorders occur at any time. Yet, specific triggers will sometimes bring on panic disorders. Some sources also include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as an anxiety disorder. Individuals with PTSD often experience a trigger that initiates the fight or flight response. MedLine Plus explains that researchers do not know why some individuals develop PTSD while others do not develop the disorder.
